Note from The Learning Doctor

Hi:

Brain Gym is such a powerful brain-based learning strategy that I'm launching a mid-month Brain Boosters newsletter which focuses on Brain Gym. It's shorter than your "regular" first of the month Brain Boosters.

Around the 15th of each month, you'll get tips for using Brain Gym. It's for folks who don't know a thing about Brain Gym.  And it's also for teachers and parents who are already using Brain Gym. Each month will include one of the 26 Brain Gym activities or variations on a Brain Gym movement.

At the beginning of each month you'll still receive your Brain Boosters for Your Kids newsletter just as you got it in September. You'll get articles, Brain Quizzes, Tips for Grownups, Resources not to miss, and so forth.

You probably already know that Brain Gym raises tests scores, improves reading and math skills, even helps with behavior challenges. Maybe you've wanted to take a class but can't find the time in your schedule or money in your budget.

Now there's a solution. It's the Brain Gym Basics TeleChat. No, it doesn't take the place of the 3-day Brain Gym 101 or a one day teacher in-service. But when you just can't get to a class, you probably can get to a telephone.

That's right. All you need is a phone to take Brain Gym Basics. Starts September 19.

You'll learn enough Brain Gym to get immediate results after just the first hour of the TeleChats.

Register today. Enrollment is limited.

Teachers, get a free audio recording of one Brain Gym activity that you can use in your class today and more information about the Brain Gym Basics TeleChats at

Parents,  get a free audio recording of one Brain Gym activity that
you can use at home with your kids, even your spouse, and more
information about the Brain Gym Basics TeleChats at

Now check out this month's feature Brain Gym Activity: "Hook-ups, Pt. 1 for Lowering Stress and Increasing Focus." And then read the story of how one teacher used Hook-ups.

P.S. Teachers, you can get graduate professional development credit from the University of Colorado for salary upgrade and recertification with the Brain Gym Basics TeleChats.  You don't have to live in Colorado to get this credit.

What is Brain Gym?

Brain Gym is a program of 26 easy physical movements that help
children, parents, and teachers learn anything faster and more
  easily.
Using the movements produces measurable gains in
physical skills, learning skills, and academic performance.

Brain Gym is based on what developmental experts and
neuroscientists have known for more than 80 years: that
physical movement activates the brain and enhances
learning.

Using the movements produces measurable gains in physical skills, learning skills, and academic performance. Using the movements produces measurable gains in physical skills, learning skills, and academic performance.

The Brain Gym movements are specific to individual tasks such as improving reading, decreasing test anxiety, helping manage ADD/ADHD behavior, and lowering golf scores, to name just a few.

Teachers and parents in more 90 countries now use Brain Gym effectively to help children (and adults) of all abilities reach their potential and benefit from rapid and lasting changes in focus, comprehension, and communication.

Brain Gym Activity

Hook-ups, Pt. 1
One of 26 Brain Gym® Movements

How to do Hook-ups, Pt. 1: Cross your left ankle over your right. Extend
your arms and cross your left wrist over your right. Bring your palms together
   and
interlace your fingers. Now bring your hands up toward your chin. Sit
quietly for a minute with your eyes closed and your tongue on the roof of
   your mouth.

You may have to help little children do this if it's difficult for them at first.

What Hook-ups does:  Relaxes the central nervous system. Connects the electrical circuitry of the body. Crosses the center mid-line to activate both left and right hemispheres of the brain. Helps us become emotionally centered and grounded.

When to use Hook-ups for yourself:

  • When you feel stressed out, overwhelmed, or confused.

  • Anytime you just want to calm down and relax

  • When something is upsetting you.

  • If it's hard to make a decision.

  • Before settling down to work at a task

  • When you want to focus and concentrate

  • If you're feeling sad or angry

When to do Hook-ups with kids: basically the same list as above including

  • During timeouts

  • When kids are arguing

  • Before and during tests

  • Too much noise and confusion in the classroom or at home

  • Temper tantrums

  • Crying jags

  • If kids can't focus on the task at hand and are distracted by everything around them

  • When they're driving you crazy

The next time you or your kids or you entire class need to settle down, relax, and concentrate, try Hook-ups. Just takes a minute or two.

You'll learn Hook-ups, Pt. 2 next month.

Using Brain Gym

Instead of using Brain Gym to improve academic performance or physical skills,
Daven Reinhardt, a teacher on the Apache Indian Reservation in Dulce, New
Mexico, just wanted his first grade P.E. kids to settle down.

Some kids were rowdy. Others cried all the time.  Hard to play a game if half the
class is hitting and fighting while others are sobbing.

He began by simply introducing Hook-ups. Hook-ups when they came
in the room and hook-ups when they left to calm them down.

Much to his surprise, after a couple of weeks, it started working. The
fighting subsided as did the tears. And slowly he introduced a few
other Brain Gym activities as well

One little girl stopped sobbing to the teacher every time her feelings
were hurt.  She was learning how to deal with her emotions.

As Daven said, "Oh, they aren't little angels now, but their behavior has dramatically
  changed."
